(p.47) 3 Conditions for Coherence
The Coherence of Theism

Richard Swinburne

Oxford University Press

A proposition is metaphysically necessary, possible, or impossible iff it becomes logically necessary, possible, or impossible when informative designators of substances or properties are substituted for uninformative ones. Consequently substances, properties, and events that are metaphysically necessary, possible, or impossible are also logically necessary, possible, or impossible. A coherent proposition is a metaphysically possible one; and it can normally be shown to be such by showing that the sentence that expresses it is logically possible.

Keywords:   coherence, informative designator, metaphysical necessity, metaphysical possibility, metaphysical impossibility
