A being of the kind analysed in Chapters 7–14 of this book would be our complete benefactor, the necessary ultimate creator of everything who can do everything and knows everything knowable. He would, therefore, deserve the maximum possible degree of respect, which is to say that he would deserve worship, contrary to the arguments of Findlay and Rachels purporting to show that there could not be a being who deserves worship. Such a being would be holy, in virtue of being perfectly good and ‘numinous’ in the sense delineated by Otto. The claim of this book that we can have reason to believe that there is a God of the kind it analyses, although we cannot fully comprehend what this would be like, is a traditional Christian claim.

Keywords:   God, holy, numinous, R. Otto, worship, J. Rachels, J. N. Findlay
