This introductory chapter begins by setting out the purpose of the book, which is to document, analyze, and explain the transformation of enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) since 1989, focusing on the role of management. The book draws on research in seven major countries in CEE: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia. The chapter outlines the five principles underlying the book, which shape its argument. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
