Reframing Catholic Theological Ethics

According to the teaching of Vatican II, the vision of Catholic theology on ethical living should be based upon the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. When we turn to the gospels to identify that source, we find someone who is at odds with the legalistic understanding of the law that appears to be dominant in first-century Palestine. Alternatively, the core of Jesus’ teaching is about the ‘Kingdom of God’ (especially in the synoptic gospels), and ‘eternal life’ (especially in the gospel of John). Accepting these thematic concepts initiates a process of change and eventually conversion in the hearer. Ultimately, laws and commandments are more about attitudes than behaviour.
