Jobs to Combat High Youth Unemployment
Tunisia is the only country in the MENA region that succeeded in its democratic transition. However, most of the economic and social challenges that led to the uprisings are still unmet. Unemployment, especially among the youth, is one of the most critical issues that Tunisia has to deal with. The impact on poverty evolution will depend heavily on the outcome of the unemployment fight. In this chapter we present a detailed analysis of the employment situation based on labor force surveys, the link between the employment status and poverty based on household surveys, and the impediments to labor demand increase. The latter is done through an analysis of the dynamics of productivity growth, employment, and jobs reallocation, using firms’ surveys. The main result is that impediments to firms’ growth are one of the main explanations behind the weakness of good jobs creations in Tunisia.
