This chapter illustrates the methodological choices that underpin the construction of the database. These include, among other more detailed aspects, country selection, industries and their grouping, the choice of size and performance indicators, the rationale for having twin samples, and the reasons behind the choice of benchmark years. The chapter also discusses several issues and limitations inherent in the data and provides caveats for their interpretation. It finally presents a set of summary descriptive tables and a list of data sources.
