This chapter is concerned with the formation of comparatives and superlatives in English. First the semantic issues involved with comparison are discussed, then the properties of affixal degree-formation. This is followed by a detailed description of the comparison of adverbs and adjectives. In particular, the chapter discusses the different determinants of the choice between synthetic and analytic forms of comparative and superlative with adjectives. A variety of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and dialectal conditioning factors are considered.

Keywords:   adverb, adjective, gradability, comparative, superlative, synthetic, analytic, periphrasis
