Advances, models, and the potential relevance of psychiatric music therapy
Although not without controversy, therapy manuals are flexible ways to standardize and control a therapeutic intervention. Researchers are developing innovative techniques to tailor unique pharmacological interventions to people’s genetic information. Innovative models of music therapy, including community, resource, wellness, and neurological models, are evolving and shaping new directions for contemporary treatment. Psychiatric music therapists may be at heighted risk for burnout and should proactively manage stressors to maintain their holistic health. In order to thrive as a profession in the future, it is vital that music therapists support their professional organizations.
