This chapter offers some concluding thoughts on the methods explored in this book, and on future developments. All the methods have something old and something new; something obvious and something odd; a characteristic ethos; strengths and weaknesses; epistemic ironies and tensions. There will be new methods as knowledge develops. Personalized medicine is a candidate for a new method, but it is not there yet. The overall picture is of a developing, untidy, methodological pluralism. There is no hierarchy of methods; controversies need to be resolved in substantive rather than formal ways.

Keywords:   personalized medicine, methodological pluralism, medical controversy, evidence-based medicine, EBM, consensus conference, translational medicine, narrative medicine
