This chapter is, to some extent, an intermezzo. Having discussed essentially disordered systems in the previous chapter, and before coming to ordered crystals in the next one, the various types of order that are encountered in soft matter are treated. A rich spectrum of possibilities exists, comprising short-range order, long-range order, and intermediate situations. In addition to positional order—implicitly meant so far—in the case of anisotropic molecules orientational order also comes into play. These possibilities are especially important for present-day developments in organic chemistry like self-assembling systems. This chapter uses, extensively, liquid crystals as model systems, because their anisotropy serves well to demonstrate many of the points mentioned.
