This chapter discusses how the euro crisis has tested the resilience of the political system in the Union and the legitimacy of EU governance. It explains why the EU is under stress and introduces the main themes of the volume. It concludes by arguing that the future of the Europe Union is neither federalism nor collapse. Yet for the EU to emerge stronger from the crisis, it has to pay more attention to the complex and unpredictable nature of democratic politics.
