The Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit (KER Unit) was founded in 2004 at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, to promote evidence based practices and to generate evidence and interventions in a way that fits the needs of patients and clinicians. Through a decade of valuable experience and guided by three principles (patient-centeredness, integrity, and generosity), the KER Unit has developed over 20 decision aids and tested many of them in a variety of settings. These aids were designed for use during the clinical encounter to facilitate information exchange in a way that is practical, engaging, and sensitive to the needs of patients and clinicians. In the future, the KER Unit is interested in exploring the use of patient-centred communication tools to promote discussions of workload and capacity, so that patients can receive care that they not only need and want, but that they can realistically implement in everyday life.
