Using the Integrative Model of Shared Decision Making (SDM) (Makoul and Clayman, 2006) as a point of comparison, this chapter explores how the Three Talk Model of Shared Decision Making (Elwyn, Chapter 13 and three widely-cited broader models of communication—Essential Elements of Communication in Medical Encounters: The Kalamazoo Consensus Statement (Makoul, 2001), SEGUE Framework for Teaching and Assessing Communication Skills (Makoul 2001), and the Calgary-Cambridge Guide (Silverman, Kurtz and Draper, 1998; 2013)—are positioned to teach SDM. While the models reviewed have unique approaches and strengths, all are consistent with the Integrative Model of SDM. Rather than creating new tools, medical educators would do well to pick one and take creative yet rigorous approaches to help learners: (1) understand the rationale for each task, and (2) develop a repertoire of skills and strategies to accomplish the tasks for individual patients across different clinical contexts.
