Woodrow Wilson

Barry Hankins

Oxford University Press

Wilson’s brief and successful sojourn as New Jersey governor paved the way to the presidency. In politics he applied the broadened, non-sectarian faith he had established at Princeton. Justice, fairness, and even public righteousness became his political goals as he emerged as a leading progressive politician in an age when reformers believed they were on the cusp of a political millennium. Renaissance, reawakening, revival, reconstruction, all harkening back to the great age when democracy emerged: These constituted the doctrines of Wilsonian progressivism. Like many others of his era, Wilson nearly equated Christianity with the advance of democracy. Progressive reform became his “new coat of doctrine.”
