This chapter discusses the concept of irreversibility in the study of time, emphasizing that irreversibility can only be meaningfully defined in contextually complete terms, necessarily involving observers as well as the systems they observe. It shows how Glauber modified the standard quantum field theoretical framework used in scattering theory to model the irreversibility associated with photon correlation observations. He introduced this irreversibility by replacing hermitian electric field operators with their non-hermitian positive energy parts. The chapter discusses the relation of probability to time and the observer, the expansion of the universe, and the Poincaré recurrence time concept in mechanics.
