This chapter starts with a brief plan of the book, naming the three major parts or themes into which the chapters are naturally grouped. A list is then given of eleven different possible meanings of the time concept. The roles of human thought and of paradigms are discussed, followed by statements on basic concepts such as events and temporal ordering. Contextuality makes its first appearance here, with a discussion of the contextuality of temporal ordering as encountered in relativity. There is a review of the many arrows of time encountered in the subject, ranging from thermodynamical and cosmological, to the sociological and personal arrows of time. The importance of temporal imagery or architecture is highlighted.

Keywords:   paradigms, time, events, temporal ordering, contextuality, arrows of time, temporal architecture
