This chapter traces the development of Petrarch’s attitudes towards patronage from his coronation oration of 1341 to the unfinished ‘Letter to Posterity’, which presents a highly revisionist view of his relationships with ‘great men’. Relating his poetics to his politics by way of his plans for the ‘revival’ of ancient Rome, it examines his association with, among others, Robert of Naples, Cola di Rienzo, the Colonna, the Visconti, and the Emperor Charles IV, and analyses the presentation of patronage in the Africa and selected verse and prose epistles. Particular attention is paid to the Coronation Oration that Petrarch delivered in 1341 on the occasion of his laureation, and the influence it exercised on succeeding generations of poets.
