The Finnish model of development has shown that it is possible to have a competitive development model that is based on forming a virtuous circle between informational and human development, or, between a competitive innovation-based economy and an inclusive welfare state—without following the Silicon Valley way. Finland developed from a relatively poor agricultural country into a high-tech country of Nokia and Linux, and combined this with one of the world’s most inclusive welfare states. Now, we are in a new situation in which all development models are faced with new, very big challenges. The biggest challenge is the broad project of reconstructing a sustainable development model that can answer to the deeper and even grander challenges, ranging from sustainable economy to sustainable wellbeing and sustainable environment. Therefore, it is analytically a very important moment for reassessing the Finnish model and its ability to represent or reconstruct a sustainable development model.
