Speaking About Oneself

(p.200) 8 Speaking About Oneself
About Oneself

Isidora Stojanovic

Oxford University Press

This chapter argues that not only de se thought, but also de se speech, is interestingly different from other forms of thought/speech. It is shown that we have reasons to be unhappy with the mainstream Kaplanian approach to what is said, and that part of this unhappiness stems from the fact that, although de se phenomena are widely acknowledged when it comes to what we believe, what we want, and how we act, they have not received yet the special status that they deserve when it comes to how we speak. A novel approach to what is said is put forward, whose ingredients include a non-standard notion of semantic content, a Donnellanian notion of what the speaker is talking about, and a semantic account of same-saying reports.
