This chapter provides an overview of electronic texts in the humanities. The term ‘electronic text’ is used specifically to mean a transcription of a text, rather than an electronic or digital image of it. This means that the text can be manipulated in various ways, for example by inserting or deleting material, or by searching for words and phrases. The term ‘electronic text in the humanities’ is used to mean an electronic representation of any textual material which is an object of study for literary, linguistic, historical, or related purposes. The research areas investigated in this book make use of computer programs which are designed to work specifically with humanities electronic texts.
