Chapter 1 provides the context of the consumer society for Value-Driven Service Innovation and explains its importance and theoretical underpinnings. Innovation is regarded as the successful exploitation of a new idea that leads to the creation of value for the organization concerned and for other actors. By example, the chapter shows how product development is driven by service innovation. It then goes on to discuss the development of academic literature in service innovation to date, and why this fails to fully explain contemporary innovation through the use of practical examples and cases—hence, the need for a new model of innovation.
