This chapter presents functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data that explores the basis for individual differences in working memory span capacity. It identifies three major and separable working memory functions, namely the focusing, shifting and inhibition of attention with neural networks connecting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and superior parietal lobule. This raises the question as to whether there are quite distinct operations for attentional control, even if there is only a single limited capacity attentional resource that is subject to such diverse control.
