This chapter explicitly argues for top down modulation with respect to conflict resolution and response selection, both of which are seen as important functions on a central executive, while concurrent cognitive functions may operate in parallel, modality-specific systems providing demands on two or more tasks do not require response selection. It argues that this fits with a multiple component model of working memory.
