This chapter addresses the challenges of transcultural issues. Values comprise ideas about the things that are important in life and they guide the rest of the manifestations of culture. Values include basic concepts, such as the sanctity of life, and the relative importance of self versus the family or social group. Cultural considerations in illness disclosure are presented. In addition, the interface between different systems and concepts of disease, the understanding of symptoms, and fear of morphine are shown. There is much cultural diversity with regard to how gender differences are viewed. The chapter then considers the interactions between religions, interaction of cultures, and practical considerations.

Keywords:   cultural diversity, morphine, gender, religions, illness disclosure, disease, symptoms
