The ideas in this chapter have been influenced by systemic and social constructionist models of thinking. A social constructionist perspective provides better understanding of how knowledge has been constructed through individual, family, and societal discourses. The processes considered can be applied to any country and culture and for any student group and include understanding the: context within which palliative care sits locally and nationally; needs of patients and their families requiring palliative care; needs of prospective students; and needs of those delivering the education. In addition, the discussion considers the key relationships that need to be nurtured for education to succeed; the resources that will be needed, including who will deliver the education; the preparation and planning process that will include the process of deciding the priorities and content and format of education that is to be delivered; and how to market, evaluate and assure quality of the programmes.
