The organizations to which the authors of this chapter belong are committed to work-based learning (WBL) and have experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating WBL programmes for palliative care. This chapter explores the nature of WBL and its relevance to palliative care education and practice; discusses the structures and processes that are required to support this form of learning; explores some of the challenges involved in WBL; and outlines the outcomes that may be achieved for patients and carers, and for learners and their employers in a variety of palliative care settings. The examples used to illustrate the issues arising from WBL are drawn from post-registration degree studies in palliative care nursing.
