This chapter argues that the concepts of race and ethnicity are constructed on factors that are pivotal in the lives of humans, and to the way humans organize their societies. As societies have become more complex, and the typical size of human settlements has risen, these concepts have become more important. Topics discussed include ethical considerations in working with the race and ethnicity concepts in health; applying race and ethnicity in a theoretically sound way; evaluation of interventions underpinning race and ethnicity; and continuing education on ethnicity, race, and health.
