This chapter argues that humans are mentally equipped to differentiate between individuals and groups. Race and ethnicity are only two of many ways that humans differentiate and group themselves and these are deep and lasting concepts. Topics discussed include the contemporary ways of conceptualizing race and ethnicity; overlaps and distinctions in concepts of race and ethnicity; historical evolution of the race and ethnicity concepts; and the likely evolution of the two concepts.
