This chapter examines how visual development might interact with visual learning to explain patterns of motion detection and stereoscopic vision that we see unfolding in the developing infant. A model examines more specifically the ‘less-is-more’ hypothesis in the domain of visual development. This is the idea that initially limiting the amount of information that the developing infant has access to actually improves long-term learning because it allows the infant to extract the central tendencies of a domain before learning the fine details. This chapter also illustrates one of the strengths of the modelling approach: models can be used to explore hypothetical scenarios that are not found in the real world. It compares models with different schedules of access to the full range of spatial frequencies.
