This chapter focuses on economic approaches to evaluation. It begins with brief discussion of why we should not expect infinite resources at our disposal, and the optimization of benefits with limited resources. It then considers the measurement of cost benefits, dealing with uncertainty around measurement, and the effect of this uncertainty on transferring results from one location to another. The chapter presents a case study that looks at the introduction of bed nets in Gambia and concludes with a discussion of some of the more common debates in the field.
