This chapter gives a fascinating account of recent developments in the study of ‘how the primate brain encodes and remembers visuomotor space’. Traditionally, the central sulcus was thought to be the dividing line between sensory areas in the parietal cortex and the motor areas in the frontal cortex. This chapter makes it quite clear that the brain is much more complicated than that, with considerable overlap in the function of various cortical regions. Furthermore, it is also proposed here that sensory-motor integration in the primate brain works though body-part-centered coordinate systems. The chapter also notes that the concept of body-part-centered visual receptive fields was foreshadowed by the pioneering work of Gabriel Hom and his collaborators in the 1960s and 1970s, who showed that the receptive fields of neurons in the striate cortex of the cat are modified by body tilt.
