This chapter investigates the transfer of knowledge in artificial grammar learning. It explores the issue of how inflexible knowledge acquired from artificial grammar learning is, in three ways: firstly, by evaluating criteria by which knowledge can be unconscious; secondly, by evaluating evidence for the flexibility of knowledge; and finally, by presenting new evidence directly testing unconscious knowledge not bound to specific perceptual features. The chapter describes two experiments that examine whether acquired knowledge is partly perceptually bound, or whether it is independent of specific perceptual features. The first experiment tests the claim that knowledge of an artificial grammar may be perceptually bound by looking at transfer between domains with known clear mappings. The second experiment asks whether unconscious knowledge can be flexibly deployed across domains.
