The temptation to think in terms of a dichotomy of abilities and disabilities stems to a large extent from the legacy of older ‘innate ideas versus blank slate’ philosophical theories. This chapter begins by examining some of the background for the nature/nurture question which that legacy has produced, and why it had better be discarded. The notion of ability is then briefly presented in this chapter as well as the concept of space and spatial coding. The chapter also provides an outline of the more general aims and layout of the book. It concludes by introducing the CAPIN model and citing the theoretical assumptions of the theory.
