This chapter first sets out a series of starting assumptions that any theory of consciousness will need either to make or to choose between. It then sketches a (partial) theory based upon these assumptions. It proposes that a key function of consciousness is to permit, in the simulated ‘real world’ medium of perceptual experience, the juxtaposition and comparison of variables controlled by different unconscious servomechanisms, especially when these are in different sensory modalities; and the modification of their set-points in the light of a wider array of information than any single servomechanism has at its command.

Keywords:   conscious experience, consciousness, perceptual experience, qualia, error detection
