This chapter describes methods used to study broad patterns of bird migration, including marking and the use of natural markers, such as morphological and genetic differences among populations, and differences in the ratios of stable isotopes in feathers and other tissues. Techniques used to study the behaviour of migrating birds are presented, including direct observation, infra-red imaging, radar, and studies of migrating birds on the ground during stopovers. Migrating birds often show marked changes in body composition and physiology, and methods of studying these are described. The investigation of bird orientation and navigation is described, and experimental and statistical methods are introduced.
