One of the projects carried on for about 15 years in the Institute for Culture of Hungary has been concerned with analysing human creative faculties; in particular, artistic creativity. This chapter describes part of the research into musical creativity. It highlights the global features of structure and style in the spontaneous improvisations of ordinary Hungarians. A principal finding of the study was that the majority of untrained subjects were able to use some coherent strategy to provide a melody, often based on forms available in their culture, but to some extent affected by the nature of the words they were required to set.
