This chapter first sets out the purpose of the book, which is to examine the history of resistance, management, and release of paramilitary prisoners in Northern Ireland. Much of the book focuses on the struggle between the prisoners' assertion of their status as political prisoners and attempts by the prison authorities to deny, undermine, and manage that assertion. The chapter presents a background to prison research in Northern Ireland, a background to the conflict in Northern Ireland, and a background to prisons in Northern Ireland. An overview of the subsequent chapters is then presented.
