This chapter investigates the importance to exchanges of the dissemination of their price and quote information. The first section examines the determinants and nature of an exchange's information dissemination policy. The second surveys the rights that exchanges have claimed over the data they publish in a world of ‘closed systems’ technology. The third describes the initial development of a new business and contractual model for the dissemination of data in an ‘open systems’ environment.
