This chapter presents an overview of the major influences on the growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the multinational enterprise in the post-war years. It discusses the importance of the links between FDI and trade, and the influences of trade policy, balance of payments policy, technology policy, as well as shifts in FDI policies in the post-Second World War era. This chapter highlights the need for an all-embracing, coordinated approach to multinational policy.
