This chapter considers the participation of workers in the organization and in the wider function of the production systems at the two plants. It discusses the impact of team working, quality circles, and problem solving activities on the nature of shop-floor work. The purpose of this chapter is to focus specifically on the extent and form of worker involvement in the plants' operations beyond day-to-day task execution. It also considers the extent to which management actively seeks to involve the workers with regard to both task execution and task design. The findings provide strong evidence to question the intentions of management at the plants with regard to worker participation, and also demonstrate that the workers themselves are not persuaded to contribute discretionary effort.
