The main concern in this book is at the level of the workplace and with particular reference to the nature of workplace relations. It presents the findings of a detailed empirical study of the form and content of workplace relations in two manufacturing organizations. There has been considerable discussion of a fundamental shift in the organization and management of manufacturing operations, especially regarding ‘flexible’ and ‘lean’ production. This chapter considers the impact of the so-called new management techniques — notably just-in-time and total quality management (JIT and TQM), human resource management (HRM), team working, lean production and the ‘Japanese model’ of the manufacturing management.

Keywords:   workplace, workplace relations, total quality management, human resource management, team working, lean production, Japanese model, manufacturing management
