This chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to explore the implementation of advanced production methods (APM), and thereby evaluate contemporary claims that a new production paradigm is emerging. This is done through a case survey of fifteen UK metalworking companies, and a focus upon one of the most important interfaces within the production process — that between engineering and manufacturing. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
