This chapter examines intra-household allocation of nutrients and gender effects within the framework of household models of intra-household allocation. It considers a number of studies of structural relations and reduced-form relations and considers analytical frameworks for investigating these issues. The analyses of southern and western Asian societies reveal that females often receive fewer nutrients relative to their needs than do males.

Keywords:   household allocation, nutrient allocation, gender effects, structural relations, reduced-form relations, females
