This chapter presents background information and data on the Arab minority in Israel. The rivalry between the Arabs and Jews in Israel has its roots in previous generations and became sharper during British rule in Palestine from 1917—48. Bloody riots in 1920, 1929 and from 1936—1939 added an element of physical violence to Arab national activity in Palestine and enabled the issue to assume international dimensions. Arab minority in Israel live mostly in the rural areas. At the beginning of 1991, their population had reached 875,000 because of high fertility rate, decline in disease and mortality, and low rate of Arab emigration.
