Three sources may be said to comprise the basic portfolio for Augustine's Rule: Regulations for a Monastery; The Rule; Reprimand to Quarrelling Nuns: Letter 211. 1–4; and Rule for Nuns: Letter 211. 5–16. The first document appears to have emerged originally from an Augustinian milieu, for it resonates with the North African Father's teaching. The second document in the dossier is widely acknowledged to be the original Rule of Saint Augustine. The third text is today generally recognized as genuine. However, its authenticity has been contested by one scholar for stylistic reasons. Finally, the last text receives special attention in the middle section of this historical survey. These brief identifications should help to reduce the confusion that necessarily besets an attempt to familiarize oneself with the literature relating to the Rule (s) of St Augustine. Research on the Augustinian Rule for the past thirty years has concentrated, inter alia, upon the following areas: the matter of authorship; its intended audience; and its date of composition. Questions regarding the authorship of the Rule, to whom was this document addressed, date (s) of composition, and date of the Rule for Nuns are explored.
