The Government of Ontario passed the Pay Equity Act in 1987. The term ‘pay equity’ meant simply that excluding non gender-related factors which influence pay, work performed by women which is equivalent in value to that performed by men in the same establishment is to be paid the same. This chapter discusses the impact of the Act and amendments. Ontario’s Pay Equity Act could be described as the ultimate in existing ‘comparable worth’ legislation. It both embraced the concept of equal pay for work of equal value (later, of pay according to the proportionate value of jobs) and required the comparison of male and female jobs in order to determine their relative worth. In this latter characteristic, at least, Ontario’s legislation provides a potential model for reform of UK law.
