An understanding of Christianity's entry and expansion in India cannot be possible without some understanding of the continent or subcontinent and its various cultures. Contexts have played a key historical role in shaping the destiny of India's peoples. India is not just a discrete and self-contained continent, but also a cultural construction in the minds of its many peoples. This chapter focuses on such contexualizations. Settings discussed include geo-environmental, ethno-demographic, language, kinship, socio-structural, and village.

Keywords:   Christianity, India, religion, contexts, geo-environment, ethno-demographic, language, kinship, socio-structural
