The idea of proletariat false consciousness presupposes that what is good or desirable for people is both factual matter and independent of their desires. This chapter argues the following: there is a fact of the matter about interests; what is good for people does not depend on what they want; bare knowledge of the facts about interests elicit desire is false; and to be wrong about what is in your interests is to be wrong about desires is also false. Discussions in this chapter includes: inhuman, sophisticated, unnatural and imaginary appetites; some theories about desire; true wants; prudential considerations and motivations; facts and interests; reasons; and a want-independent conception of interests.

Keywords:   false consciousness, desires, interests, true wants, prudential considerations, motivations, reasons
