This chapter discusses the expansion of the British Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century and the growth of Nonconformist missions. Evangelical Nonconformists considered it their prime duty to convert the souls of the heathen to Christianity. Experience on the mission field also led some missionaries to see as a secondary objective the improvement of the temporal conditions of the people to whom they were called to preach.
