This chapter discusses the emergence of the peace movement in Britain. The peace movement appeared in Britain in response to the ‘Great War’ — as it was called until this epithet passed to the much less protracted though more intensive and extensive conflict of 1914–18 — which revolutionary France fought against much of Europe for almost a quarter of a century. It details the four characteristics of this Great War with France that produced such a response in Britain.
